In the past thirty years, more than 400 glass birds have been produced by Iittala, the first firm to sell them. The acclaimed Finnish glass artist Oiva Toikka's talents, the distinctive Nuutajärvi glass factory, and skilled glass blowers all contributed to the success.
In a facility in the 200-year-old glassmaking community of Nuutajärvi, Finland, each bird is mouth-blown by hand. Each bird is unique with its own specific color variations, thus the glass blowers must have the highest level of technical skill and creative understanding to create just one bird.
Toikka's birds are highly prized as both collector's items and presents. Each bird is authenticated by the signature "O. Toikka Nuutajärvi."
